Discover tips and tricks to declutter and organize your child’s space. A clean, organized space means a clean, organized mind. It always feels so refreshing after decluttering! There’s nothing better than packing garbage bags full of unwanted items and getting them out of your home.
Decluttering and organizing kids’ rooms is essential for creating a fresh and clean environment that promotes a sense of calm and order.
By getting rid of unwanted toys, clothes and belongings, this creates more space for play and relaxation.
A well-organized room can inspire creativity, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being for both children and caregivers.
Embrace the process of decluttering and organizing to transform your kid’s room into a welcoming and harmonious space they can enjoy and thrive in.
Go Through Clothing First
Going through my kid’s clothing first gets my momentum going for the ultimate spring cleaning. Since they are only 3 and 2, they don’t help much in this process. I start with the drawers first since it has less clothing than the closets.
Here are the steps I take to spring-clean their dressers:
- Take every item out of the dresser.
- Carefully go through each item and if it no longer fits, has holes/stains, mismatched socks, etc., it needs to either be put in a storage bin, thrown out, or donated.
- Make separate piles for those categories.
- Fold and put back the clothing that is staying in the dresser
(organizing tip: use a label maker and label the drawers with the corresponding clothing items).
These are my favorite organizing bins for my kids’ clothing. They’re large, clear, and easy to see what’s in each bin. Labeling also helps a ton! Labeling seriously makes organizing everything so much easier.
Here are the steps I take to spring-clean their closets:
- Just like the dresser, take everything out of the closet.
- Go through each items and if it no longer fits, has holes/stains, it needs to be put in the storage bin, thrown out, or donated pile.
- When adding items back into the closet, use matching hangers for a clean, seamless look.
- You can also use these closet dividers but I found once my kids’ were over a certain age, I didn’t need them anymore. They are great for nurseries, though!
Once you’re done going through the dresser and closet, now it’s time to organize things that you’re not keeping in the room. The items you want to keep should go in storage bins, which are clear and easy to see, or labeled.
Next, pack up the clothes from the donate pile. I like to drop mine off at Goodwill, but you can use Facebook marketplace, women & children shelters, and Salvation Army. There are a ton of ways to get rid of items that are still in good condition, that no longer serve you.
Lastly, throw out anything that is damaged, has holes, or cannot be donated.
Sort and Organize Toys
I use a bookshelf to organize some of my daughter’s things in her room, and this storage cube for my son’s room. You can easily switch out the storage bins to match the decor of the room.
Toy rotation is huge here! While most of our everyday items are in the living room where we spend a lot of time, my kids also love to be in their rooms. This is why I love to keep everything organized.
For the ultimate spring cleaning of toys, you can do the following:
Decluttering Tips:
• Start by sorting through toys and separating them into categories (e.g., dolls, stuffed animals, action figures, puzzles, etc.).
• Encourage your kid’s to donate toys they no longer play with, and explain to them there are other kids in need of these toys.
• Set a limit on the number of toys to keep to avoid overcrowding.
Sorting and Organizing Toys:
• Use storage bins, baskets, and shelves to categorize and store toys.
• Label containers with pictures or words to help kids easily identify where each toy belongs.
• Consider using a toy rotation system to keep toys organized and prevent clutter.
Involve Your Kids in the Process:
• Make decluttering and organizing a fun activity by turning it into a game or challenge.
• Allow kids to make decisions about which toys to keep, donate, or discard.
• Create a reward system to motivate kids to participate and complete the task.
By following these tips and involving kids in the decluttering and organizing process, you can make it a positive and engaging experience for both children and parents!
